3 3/8” Ultra Gauge Instructions

Warning: Before doing any work on any kind of vehicle, disconnect the negative(-) battery cable from the battery. Failure to do so may result in burns, electrical shock, or other personal injuries.

Recommended installation technique:

  1. Decide on a location to mount the gauge(s).
  2. Drill, cut and do whatever it takes to get the location ready to install the gauge(s).
  3. Install the sender(s) and switch(s) if applicable. Refer to section 'sender installation'.
  4. Install the gauge, but do not secure into place.
  5. Make all wire connections. Refer to section 'Gauge, sender, and switch wire connections'
  6. Make sure all gauges are functioning. If any problem refer to the section 'trouble shooting'.
  7. Secure the gauge in place.
  8. See “Gauge calibration routines” to calibrate the gauge to your vehicle.
  9. Read over section “Gauge features” to better understand the features of your gauge.

Gauge Wire Connections

Red wire: Ignition Wire, hookup to a switched +12 volt ignition source. Example: Accessory fuse in fuse box.

Black Wire: Ground wire, mate all black wires from the gauge, sender, switch and hook to a good ground. Example: (-) battery terminal.

Purple Wire: dimmer wire, hookup to a switched light source. Example: Any switcher light bulb.

White Wire: Speed signal wire, for Cyberdyne, mate to the tan wire coming from the speed sender. All others connect to the speed (+) wire.

Note: All wires should be routed away from the ignition system, spark plug wires or any type of electrical noise imposing wires. Any wire brought through the firewall should be secured through a rubber grommet.

Gauge Calibration Routines

Adjust speedometer calibration:

  1. Turn the dimmer on, then turn on the gauge
  2. Cal 45 should be displayed on the display. If not, turn off gauge and repeat step 1 again.
  3. Get your vehicle moving at 45 MPH.
  4. Hold at 45 MPH for a second and press the button.
  5. The speedometer has now been calibrated to your vehicle.

Note: The speedometer will calibrate to any speed input between the ranges of 1000 to 200,000 pulses per mile.

Speedometer:

When calibrated the speedometer will function up to 999 MPH.

Odometer:

The odometer will record miles up to 999,999 and is not resetable.

Trip Odometer:

The trip odometer will record miles up to 999.9 and is resetable. The decimal point for tenths is shown as a dash for easy viewing. Example: 127-6 .

The procedure for resetting the trip odometer is as follows:

  1. Make sure the trip odometer is displayed on the gauge.
  2. Push in and hold the button until the display reads 0-0.
  3. Release the button.

Speed Recall:

Push the button until SP xxx appears on the display center. The xxx is the highest speed attained since the gauge was turned on. This action is in real time and will be updated to the highest speed reading with or without being displayed on the display center.

0 – 60 Time Recall:

The 0 – 60 second timer measures the time it takes your vehicle to attain a speed of 60 MPH from a stopped position. The maximum time which will display is 9.99 seconds. Any time over 9.99 seconds will be displayed as ”slo”. Push the button until 60 xxx appears on the display. The xxx is a three digit number displaying the time in hundredths of a second. This function is in real time and will be updated every time the vehicle goes from a stopped position to 60 MPH.

¼ Mile Time Recall:

The ¼ mile timer measures the time it takes your vehicle to cover ¼ mile from a stopped position. The maximum time which will be displayed is 99.9 seconds. Any time over 99.9 seconds will display as “slo”. Push the button until 25 xxx appears on the display. The xxx is a 3 digit number displaying the time in tenths of a second. This function is in real time and will be updated every time vehicle goes from a stopped position to a ¼ mile.

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting related to all gauges:

Gauge does not light:

1.        Check to make sure of a good ground.

2.       Check the fuse, if used

3.       Make sure +12 volts is supplied to the red wire.

4.       Test gauge by hooking up directly across battery. Red wire connects to the + terminal and the black wire connects to the - terminal. The gauge will light up and display, scroll, or flash something, if functioning properly.

Fuse always blows:

1.        Check the amperage rating on the fuse. It should be at least 1 amp.

2.       Check all wires external to the gauge. Make sure none of them are shorted together or to ground.

3.       Make sure all wires are connected to the proper input.

Gauge does not dim:

1.        Check the connection to the purple wire. Make sure there is +12 volts when the headlight switch is on.

2.       Test the dimmer wire by hooking up to the + terminal on the battery after disconnecting purple wire. When connected the gauge should dim. When not connected the gauge should, within a few seconds, be bright again.

When I push the button nothing happens:

1.        Is the gauge on and in normal operating mode?

2.        Call 724-258-8440 for technical assistance.

Speedometer Related

No speed reading:

  1. Is the speed (+) wire from the sender connected to the white wire on the gauge?
  2. If using a Cyberdyne sender:
    1. Is the black wire from the sender grounded?
    2. Is there a metal pin between the speed sender and the transmission?
    3. Is the metal pin long enough engaging both the speed sender and the transmission?
  3. Call 1-724-258-8440 for assistance.

Speedometer Calibration:

Note: Before calibrating the speedometer and with the gauge in normal operating mode, make sure the gauge has some kind of speed reading. No matter what the pulses per mile of the sender, the gauge should register some speed reading. If there is no speed reading, see section 'for speed input assistance'.

After speed calibration my gauge displays an E01:

  1. This error code 1. This stats that there was an attempt to calibrate the gauge with no speed input. Either the gauge was attempted to be calibrated while the vehicle was setting still or there is no speed input to the gauge.
  2. To reset the error, turn off the ignition.
  3. If you were moving and got this error code see section “No speed reading’ for speed input assistance.

After speed calibration my gauge displays an E02:

1.        This is error code 2. This states that the senders pulses per mile input to the gauge is too low for the gauge to function properly.

2.        To reset the error, turn off the ignition.

3.        Call 724-258-8440 for technical assistance.

After speed calibration my gauge displays am E03:

1.        This is error code 3. This states that the senders pulses per mile input to the gauge is too high for the gauge to function properly.

2.        To rest the error, turn off the ignition.

3.        Call 724-258-8440 for technical assistance.

I accidentally got into the speedometer calibration routine:

1.        Simply turn off the gauge, turn off the dimmer and turn the gauge back on.

After speedometer calibration my gauge still reads incorrect:

1.        Make sure the vehicle is moving at 45 MPH before the button is pressed.

2.        Try calibration again. See 'Adjust speedometer calibration' in the 3 3/8' Ultragauge instructions.

Gauge feature general questions:

My 0 - 60 and 1/4 mile times seem incorrect:

1.        Make sure the vehicle is at a dead stop before acceleration takes place. If vehicle is moving just a little bit the timer may not reset from the last reading or the timer may already be calculating a new time.

2.        Make sure speedometer is calibrated and reading the proper speed.

Trip odometer will not clear:

1.  Make sure the trip odometer is displayed on the display center before holding the button in to reset it.
