Warning: Before doing any work on any kind of vehicle, disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. Failure to do so may result in burns, electrical shock, or other personal injuries and damage to vehicle.

Recommended installation technique:

  1. Decide on a location to mount the gauge(s).
  2. Drill, cut and do whatever it takes to get the location ready to install the gauge(s).
  3. Install the sender(s) and switch(s) , if applicable. Refer to section 'sender installation'.
  4. Install the gauge, but do not secure into place.
  5. Make all wire connections. Refer to section 'Gauge, sender, and switch wire connections'
  6. Make sure all gauges are functioning. If any problem refer to the section 'trouble shooting'.
  7. Adjust warning indicators or fuel tank capacity. Refer to section 'understanding and setting warning indicators' or ' setting fuel tank capacity'.
  8. Secure the gauge in place.
  9. Read over sections 'memory recall and 'special functions'.

Gauge, sender and switch wire connections:

Red wire: Ignition wire, hookup to a switched +12 volt ignition source. Example: Accessory fuse in fuse box.

Black wire: Ground wire, mate all black wires from the gauge, sender, switch, and hookup to a good ground. Example: Battery (-) terminal.

Purple wire: Dimmer wire, hookup to a switched light source. Example: Any switched light bulb>

White wire: Signal wire, mate the white wire from the gauge to the white wire from the sender.

Note: All wire should be routed away from the ignition system, spark plug wires or any type of electrical noise imposing wires. Any wire brought through the firewall should be secured through a rubber grommet.

Understanding And Setting The Warning Indicators

The chart below lists gauges, their operating range and four indicators. The gauge will flash as a warning that readings are getting close to being out of normal operating range. The gauge will scroll “hi” or “low” when readings are completely out of normal operating range.

Fuel Level Gauges:

Range: 0 – 55 Gallons

Low Scroll: 3 Gallons

Low Flash: 4 Gallons

Hi Flash: None

Hi Scroll: None

Each gauge can be looked up in the chart above to ascertain which warning indicator is adjustable. The warning which is adjustable is marked with an asterisk. To adjust your warning indicator proceed with the following steps:

1:  Turn off the gauge.

2. If the dimmer wire is connected to a switched light source, turn on your lights. Otherwise place a +12v        to the purple wire.

3.        Turn on the gauge. At this point the gauge should be on and displaying a flashing number. If the display is not flashing then repeat steps 1 – 3, other wise go onto step 4.

4.        4.  The gauge is now in adjustment mode. Turn the screw located through the hole in the back of the gauge until the number on the display is what you would like your warning indicator to be set at.

5.          Wait 30 seconds to make sure the desired number stays displayed. If the number changes repeat srep 4. If number holds then turn the gauge off.

6.        Turn off your lights or remove +12v from the purple wire.

7.        The warning indicator is now set and can be checked anytime repeating steps 1 – 3. To re-adjust your warning indicator repeat steps 1 – 7.

Setting Fuel Tank Capacity

1.        Turn off the gauge.

2.         If the dimmer wire is connected to a switched light source turn on your lights. Otherwise, place +12v to the purple wire.

3.        Turn gauge on. At this point the gauge should be on and displaying a flashing number. If the display is not flashing then repeat steps 1 – 3. Otherwise go to step 4.

4.        The gauge is now in adjustment mode. Turn the screw located through the hole in back of gauge until the number on the display is your fuel tank capacity.

5.        Wait 30 seconds to make sure desired number stays displayed. If number changes repeat step 4. If number holds turn off the gauge.

6.        Turn off your lights or remove +12v from the purple wire.

7.        The fuel gauge is now set and can be checked anytime by repeating steps 1 – 3. To re-adjust fuel tank capacity repeat steps 1 – 7.

Special Functions

All Fuel Gauges

  1. Displays “ful” when reading is at fuel tank capacity to one gallon below fuel tank capacity.
  2. Displays a “g” in the rightmost digit when displaying fuel reading. Example: 18g represents 18 gallons of fuel.

Ford, Chrysler, and Stewart Warner, and Standard After Market Fuel Gauges:

Gauge always scrolls 'lo' and I know I have fuel in my tank:

Note: This means that there is an open circuit between the white wire on the gauge to the ground connection through the fuel tank.

1.        Check the white wire connection between the gauge and the sender. Make sure of a good connection.

2.        Make sure the fuel tank is at ground. Run wire from the black wire on the gauge to the fuel tank.

3.        Disconnect the white wire between the sender and the gauge.

4.        Measure the resistance of the sender from white wire to ground. It should be between 0 and 240 ohms.

5.        Ground the white wire on the gauge. The gauge, if working properly, should count down until it scrolls 'ful'.

Note: If  both 4 and 5 check out properly then there is a wire connection problem. Otherwise, call 724-258-8440 for technical assistance.

Gauge always scrolls 'ful':

1.  Check white signal wire to make sure it is not shorted to ground.

2.  Disconnect the white wire on the gauge, If working properly, gauge should count down until it says 'lo'

As my fuel level increases in my fuel tank, my fuel gauge reads lower:

1.You have the incorrect fuel gauge.

As my fuel level decreases in my fuel tank, my fuel gauge reads higher:

  1. You have the incorrect fuel gauge.

As my fuel level decreases in my fuel tank, my fuel gauge reads higher:

  1. You have the incorrect fuel gauge.

All GM, VDO, and Volkswagen Fuel Gauges:

Gauge always displays 'ful':

Note: This means that there is an open circuit between the white wire on the gauge to the ground connection through the fuel tank.

  1. Check the white wire connection between the gauge and the sender. Make sure of a good connection.
  2. Make sure the fuel tank is at ground. Run wire from the black wire on the gauge to the fuel tank.
  3. Disconnect the white wire between the sender and the gauge.
  4. Measure the resistance of the sender from white wire to ground. It should be between 0 and 200 ohms.
  5. Ground the white wire on the gauge. The gauge, if working properly, should count down until it scrolls 'lo'.

Note: If  both 4 and 5 check out properly then there is a wire connection problem. Otherwise, call 724-258-8440 for technical assistance.

Gauge always scrolls low and I know I have fuel in my tank:

1.  Check white signal wire to make sure it is not shorted to ground.

2.  Disconnect the white wire on the gauge, If working properly, gauge should count up until it says 'ful'

As my fuel level increases in my fuel tank, my fuel gauge reads lower:

1.You have the incorrect fuel gauge.

As my fuel level decreases in my fuel tank, my fuel gauge reads higher:
